Scorecard

7th September 2020

Rainhill missed the chance to move to the top of Group D after falling to a disappointing defeat at Ruskin Drive.

With Rainford beating Newton-le-Willows by 46 runs, Rainhill could have joined Newton on 12 points had they seen off the threat of St Helens Town.

St Helens won the toss and elected to bat. Rainhill took a number of early wickets, with Ashen Daluwattage (2-8) removing both openers, and once Adam Edwards had removed Daniel Murphy for 0 the home side found themselves on 23 for 3. However Daniel Roberts, who hit an impressive 51 from 65 balls, and Ian Huyton (who played more cautiously on his way to an unbeaten 26) were not only able to halt the fall of wickets but built a partnership worth 50 runs to at least give St Helens Town something to bowl at.

After Roberts holed out to Adam Edwards off the bowling of Jack Ellis, the St Helens lower order struggled and could offer little resistance as Rainhill bowlers Edwards (3-26) and Sam Addy (2-15) shared the final four wickets. St Helens Town were bowled out for 120 from 38.3 overs, and Rainhill were understandably satisfied with their performance in the field.

Requiring a modest 121 to win, Rainhill lost opener Biley Banerjee early for 0, but Ethan Powell (19) and Owen Groom (18) took the score to 40 before another wicket fell. The duo were dismissed in quick succession, halting Rainhill's momentum. Thereafter no Rainhill batsman was able to stay around for long and wickets fell regularly as Rainhill collapsed from 40 for 1 to 76 all out. Dave Gregson was the pick of the bowlers for St Helens, with 5-18.

It was a disappointing end to the group stage, but it has been a generally positive season for the 2nd XI and they deserve credit for their determined performances.

Points: St Helens Town 3pts, Rainhill 0pts.
