Rainhill beat St Helens Town by 120 runs

7th September 2020
Rainhill: 203 all out (Ben Edmundson 46, James Clarke 36, James Davies 3-37) St Helens Town: (Joshua Davies 20, William Griffiths 12, Jack Lowrie 3-8)
Rainhill won by 120 runs
Rainhill's latest group match resulted in a straightforward victory at home to St Helens Town.
Having won the toss, Rainhill opted to bat first. From the outset Rainhill's batsmen made their intentions clear, although they suffered an early setback with the loss of two early wickets - Mark Viggars (3) and Sam Kershaw (7). Ross Higham was out lbw to Liam Gaskell for 10 a short while later and, at 33 for 3, Rainhill were in a spot of trouble.
However, some intelligent and determined batting from David Atkinson (26), James Clarke (36), Ben Edmundon (46 from 48 balls) and Jamie Harrison (32 from 29 balls) helped Rainhill to a total of 203. St Helens' bowlers will no doubt be disappointed with that total having made a positive start, but there were some strong individual performances - especially from James Davies and David Gaskell, who took three wickets apiece.
In response, St Helens were 1 for 1 when Jack Lowrie bowled Ryan Donnelly, and suffered further misfortune when Craig Woods was caught behind off the bowling of Jamie Harrison for 4. Lowrie (3 for 8) and David Pennington (2 for 17) maintained the pressure and reaped the rewards as St Helens collapsed to 45 for 6.
William Griffiths (12) and Joshua Davies (20) helped forge something of a recovery for the visitors, but the result was not in doubt. The innings was ended when Phillip Murgatroyd was bowled by Ben Edmundson (2 for 0), and St Helens Town were all out for 83.
Points: Rainhill 3 pts, St Helens Town 0pts.
